Spacebar Counter

Count your spacebar presses, measure your CPS (clicks per second), and detect hardware faults like spacebar chatter and double spacing.

The TechTester spacebar counter measures how fast you can press your spacebar and how many times you can hit it in a set time period all directly in your browser with no download and no account required. Choose from preset timers of 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds, press your spacebar to start, and your speed in clicks per second (CPS) and total press count appear in real time. The tool also includes a Chatter Diagnostic mode that detects double-firing spacebar faults when one physical press registers as two keydown events and a simple Press Counter mode with no timer for freeform counting.

What the TechTester spacebar tester does

The TechTester spacebar counter combines three tools in one page a competitive speed test, a hardware diagnostic, and a simple press counter. Here is what each mode does:

Speed Test mode

Set a timer (5s, 10s, 30s, 60s), press spacebar to start, and hit it as fast as you can. Your CPS, total presses, and speed rank appear when time runs out. Try to beat your score.

Chatter Diagnostic mode

Detects spacebar chatter when one physical press fires two keydown events within 30ms. Shows total chatter events detected and flags the spacebar as faulty or healthy. No competitor has this.

Press Counter mode

No timer. Just counts every spacebar press with a large visible number. Reset button to start over. Useful for confirming every press registers and for freeform counting tasks.

How to use the spacebar counter 4 steps

Step 1 Choose your mode

Select Speed Test if you want to measure your CPS and compare against the ranking table. Select Chatter Diagnostic if your spacebar is double spacing or registering extra presses. Select Press Counter if you just want to count presses with no time limit.

Step 2 Press your spacebar to start

In Speed Test mode press your spacebar once to start the timer. The countdown begins immediately. In Chatter Diagnostic mode press Start then press your spacebar repeatedly for 10 seconds while the tool monitors for double-firing events. In Press Counter mode press your spacebar and the counter increments immediately.

Step 3 Hit the spacebar as fast as you can (Speed Test)

Press the spacebar repeatedly as fast as possible until the timer ends. Keep a consistent rhythm rather than bursting consistent rhythm almost always produces a higher final CPS than random fast bursts. The live CPS counter updates every second so you can see your speed in real time.

Step 4 Read your results and check your rank

When the timer ends your final CPS, total press count, and speed rank appear. See the CPS rank table in Section E to understand where your score sits. Use the Retry button to play again and try to improve. Share your score using the share button to challenge friends.

What is your spacebar speed rank?

Your CPS (clicks per second) score determines your rank. Here is the complete TechTester spacebar speed ranking table:

🐢

Turtle

0 to 3 CPS

Very slow. Casual typing pace. Most spacebar keys are slower than mouse clicks.

🐇

Rabbit

4 to 6 CPS

Average speed. Comfortable for typing but slow for gaming. Most users land here on their first attempt.

🦊

Fox

7 to 9 CPS

Above average. You are faster than most casual users. This range is comfortable for most gaming actions.

🐆

Cheetah

10 to 12 CPS

Fast. You are likely a regular gamer or typist. Faster than 85% of people who take this test.

🦅

Falcon

13 to 15 CPS

Elite. You have mastered spacebar technique. Used by competitive gamers for bridging in Minecraft and rhythm games.

⚡

Lightning

16+ CPS

Exceptional. Top 1% of spacebar speed. At this level check your keyboard does not have chatter some of these presses may be double fires.

What CPS actually means for gaming

CPS matters most in games where the spacebar controls a frequent action jumping in platformers, jumping in Minecraft bridging, dodging in Geometry Dash, firing in some browser games, and any game with a spacebar activated mechanic. The global average is around 6 CPS for a relaxed first attempt. With practice most people reach 8-10 CPS within a week of daily testing. Beyond 12 CPS usually requires technique alternating thumb and index finger across the spacebar rather than single-thumb pressing.

What is spacebar chatter and how do you detect it?

Spacebar chatter is when one physical press of the spacebar registers as two or more keydown events in rapid succession typically within 10 to 30 milliseconds of each other. It is caused by the mechanical switch inside the spacebar stabilizer assembly bouncing briefly as it makes contact, firing multiple electrical signals from one physical actuation.

What spacebar chatter causes

  • Double spaces appearing when you press spacebar once while typing
  • Accidental double jumps in games your character jumps twice from one press
  • Extra actions in games that use spacebar for shooting or interacting
  • Double entries in spreadsheets, forms, and text fields
  • Your spacebar CPS score appearing artificially high not real speed, just chatter

How to tell if your score is real speed or chatter

If your CPS score is above 14 on a standard keyboard, run the Chatter Diagnostic mode. A genuine 14+ CPS score requires extremely fast and consistent thumb actuation. If the diagnostic detects chatter events, some of your speed test score was from double fires rather than real presses your actual speed is lower than the number shown.

How to fix spacebar chatter

  1. Clean the spacebar area with compressed air first debris under the spacebar can cause the switch to bounce. Remove the spacebar keycap (it pops off on most keyboards) and blow out any dust or debris from the switch area.
  2. Apply a small amount of contact cleaner to the spacebar switch if compressed air does not fix it. Deoxit D5 is the most commonly recommended contact cleaner for keyboard switches. Apply a tiny amount to the switch and press the spacebar rapidly 20 to 30 times to work it through the contacts.
  3. Adjust the debounce setting if your keyboard software allows it. Some gaming keyboards (Razer Synapse, SteelSeries GG, Corsair iCUE) have a debounce time setting that can be increased to filter out switch bounce.
  4. Replace the spacebar switch if cleaning does not resolve the issue. On mechanical keyboards the spacebar uses a standard switch (typically a Cherry MX or clone) that can be desoldered and replaced. On membrane keyboards with integrated spacebar mechanisms, the keyboard itself typically needs replacement.

Spacebar not working?

Fix 1 Check for debris under the spacebar (most common cause)

The spacebar is the longest key on the keyboard and has the most stabilizer components underneath it. Dust, crumbs, and debris accumulate under the spacebar faster than any other key. Remove the spacebar keycap (pull straight up it pops off on most keyboards), use compressed air to blow out debris from the switch area and stabilizer wire, then reattach. Test with the TechTester Press Counter mode to confirm every press registers.

Fix 2 Test whether the issue is hardware or software

Open the TechTester Press Counter mode and press your spacebar. If every press registers in the counter, your spacebar hardware is working and the problem is software-specific check the application where the spacebar is not responding. If presses do not register in the counter, the hardware or connection has a fault.

Fix 3 Disable Sticky Keys on Windows

Windows Sticky Keys can interfere with rapid spacebar presses. If pressing the spacebar five times in quick succession triggers a Windows sound or dialogue box, Sticky Keys is active. Disable it: Settings then Accessibility then Keyboard then turn off Sticky Keys. This is a common cause of spacebar issues in gaming specifically.

Fix 4 Update or reinstall keyboard drivers

Device Manager then expand Keyboards then right click your keyboard then Update driver then Search automatically. If the keyboard appears with a yellow warning icon, uninstall the driver and reconnect the keyboard to reinstall fresh. For gaming keyboards also update the companion software (Razer Synapse, Corsair iCUE, Logitech G HUB).

Fix 5 Test on a different computer

Connect your keyboard to a different computer and open the TechTester spacebar counter at techtester.online/spacebar-counter/. If the spacebar works on the second computer the issue is your original computer settings, drivers, or a USB port fault. If the spacebar fails on every computer, the switch or PCB trace is physically damaged and the keyboard needs repair or replacement.

The global average is around 5 to 6 CPS on a first attempt. Scoring 7 to 9 CPS is above average. Scoring 10 to 12 CPS is competitive and faster than most gamers. Above 13 CPS is elite level. If you score above 14 CPS, run the Chatter Diagnostic to confirm those are genuine presses and not switch bounce double fires.

Spacebar chatter is when one physical press fires two keydown events within milliseconds of each other due to the mechanical switch briefly bouncing on contact. It causes double spaces when typing, double jumps in games, and artificially inflated CPS scores. Use the TechTester Chatter Diagnostic mode to detect it.

Double spacing is almost always caused by spacebar chatter the switch inside the spacebar bouncing and firing twice from one press. Clean the spacebar area with compressed air first. If the problem persists apply contact cleaner to the switch mechanism or increase the debounce time in your keyboard software.

Open techtester.online/spacebar-counter/, select Speed Test mode and your preferred timer length (5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds), then press your spacebar once. The countdown starts immediately on the first spacebar press no need to click a start button.

Yes. The TechTester spacebar counter works on any keyboard including laptop built-in keyboards, membrane keyboards, mechanical keyboards, and wireless keyboards. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.

Games where spacebar speed matters most: Minecraft (bridging and jumping), Geometry Dash (rhythm jumping), most platformer browser games (jumping), and games that assign shooting, dodging, or interacting to the spacebar. A CPS above 10 is generally sufficient for all of these.

Practice with daily short sessions 5 to 10 rounds of the 10 second test. Focus on consistent rhythm rather than random bursting. Most people improve by 1 to 2 CPS within a week of daily practice. Advanced technique: use your index finger or middle finger across the far end of the spacebar rather than your thumb longer fingers can travel faster.
